“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago” – Warren Buffet
Sometimes it is difficult to look back in life and wonder how you got there. Working with our clients through retirement has taught us many lessons, cone more important than to have a plan, put care into that plan and let time work. When you plant a seed in the ground hoping to grow a tree the best thing you can do is water it, provide nutrients and let nature do its thing. Nobody was ever successful at growing a tree by continually pulling the seed out of the ground to make sure it is ok. Like gardening, when investing it is important to put together a plan (plant a seed), monitor your investments, tweak as necessary and le time work for you.
Trying to “time the market”, hopping in and out given media news or political issues is no different than digging up your tree and Bringing it inside very time you hear a storm is on the way. It may make you feel good to think you are saving yourself from a downturn in the market, but the only thing more difficult that trying to figure out when to get out of the market is trying to figure out when to get back in. Just as your newly planted tree needs to stay in the ground and grow, your investments need time to grow in the market. Most of the time easier said than done, but careful planning and patience, like providing nutrients and time to grow to a sapling will give you investments the best chance in the long run. So as summer fast approaches, go get outside and find a tree that you can relax under its branches and remember tat seed planted many many years ago.
